EDINBURGH · SCOTLAND
Castle rock, dark closes, the road north.
The Castle and the Old Town vaults, single malt and ghost walks by lantern, and the Highland day trips that leave from the city’s own doorstep. Loch Ness, Skye, Glencoe and the long way north.
The big day out
If you only leave the city once.
Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands, and back before dark. The Scottish day Edinburgh is built around.
The classics
Edinburgh’s Most Popular Tours
The Castle, the vaults, the ghost walks and the Highland run. What most visitors book first.
Hour by hour
Edinburgh changes with the light.
Few cities turn over as completely between noon and midnight. The castle by day, the sandstone gold at dusk, the closes another thing entirely after dark. Take it as a clock.
Daylight
The Castle, the Mile, the climb up Arthur’s Seat.Start at the fortress on its rock, walk the Royal Mile down to Holyrood, then up the old volcano for the whole city at once.
Golden hour
A dram as the light turns amber. The hour the sandstone glows. A whisky tasting on the Royal Mile, a viewpoint over the New Town, the gardens before the dark comes down.
After dark
Down into the closes, by lantern. This is the most haunted city in Europe and it earns it after midnight. Vault tours, kirkyard walks, and pubs that have been open four hundred years.
Only in Edinburgh
Three things you can’t do anywhere else.
Castles and old towns are everywhere. A buried city you can walk through, the place a global story was written, and Scotch tasted at the source are not. Worth planning around.
The buried city
Walk Under the Old Town
When the South Bridge went up in 1788, the chambers beneath its arches became a sealed underworld of vaults and closes. You go down into 18th-century streets the city grew over and forgot. No other capital is stacked on its own ruins like this.

Where it was written
The Birthplace of Harry Potter
J.K. Rowling wrote the first books in Edinburgh cafés. Greyfriars Kirkyard has the real Thomas Riddell headstone; Victoria Street is the model for Diagon Alley; the Hogwarts Express still crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct. It started here, not on a film set.

Scotch Where It Is Made
By law, it is only Scotch if it is distilled and matured in Scotland. Taste single malt within reach of the casks — on the Royal Mile or out in the glens. Everywhere else on earth, it is just whisky.

First time here?
Four steps, in order.
Never been? Do it like this. Walk the Old Town, climb to the Castle, go under the city after dark, then take the day north. Each step picks up where the last one leaves off.
By place
Pick a corner of Scotland.
The Old Town for the Castle and the closes. Loch Ness for the big day north. Skye for the far west. Glencoe for the glen and the viaduct. Stirling for the bonnie banks. St Andrews for the golf and the coast.
By interest
Or pick what you came for.
Ghosts if you want the dark. Whisky if you want the warm. Harry Potter if you grew up with it. The Castle, the history, the food, the Highlands — pick your thread and pull it.
